| Photo above: A huge
bust of Lei Feng currently situated under the Mount Taishan in China. In
the front of the stand is a quotation of Chairman Mao,"To Learn
from comrade Lei Feng". Some CR friends asked my opinion about whether Lei Feng has ever existed. My view is that he did exist but his story had been modified or even twisted to tie in with the political needs. On book, he was born in a family of poor peasants in Hunan Province in 1940. After the Japanese killed his father, his mother committed suicide as a result of the harassment she received at the hands of the son of her landlord. The Party saved the orphan Lei Feng, fed him and brought him up as a mother would her own child. He joined the PLA and became a squad leader afterward. Diligent study of the works of Chairman Mao taught him how to live a life of extreme frugality, to eschew selfishness and to devote himself body and soul to the revolution and to the people. His greatest desire in life was to be nothing more than "a revolutionary screw that never rusts". His influence on Chinese people is HUGE and prolonged to nowadays. Being an all positive hero, he is regarded as an outstanding model of good citizen. It's interesting to note that apart from Chairman himself, Lei Feng is the second common image to be used in all aspect of life. Many new products nowadays still borrow his image for promotion purpose. If you are a Lei Feng fans, I think you will love to see all the related stuff showed here. |
